Workshop Blog No 32 – No 984s

With the sides prepared I can now make a commitment to the sole of the plane. i.e. mouth position and adjuster recess. This is a critical time which I would prefer not to get wrong, in fact it can get scary. The excitement level gets stronger as things progress.

Workshop blog no 23 – No 985

Looking back on the last posting and it has been a whole month – I have been away for a while and life just seems to get in the way of work sometimes. Was having a look at what retirement could be like, but I can’t afford it!

A quick photo of work on the upper blade bed. The amount of work here was greatly underestimated in my planning. It is always difficult to estimate in the first place and then I keep tweaking and tuning as I go along. Why spoil the ship for a ha’porth of tar. I don’t think I will ever be rich but I can aim to be the best.

I will retain radio silence for a little bit longer until I have something more interesting to show.

Workshop Blog no 15 – No 985

I was hoping to have some more pictures on the No 985 but I had a lot of other work to be done. Here is the same method of fixing on the No 982 plane. Showing the final torque on the screws after applying thread locking compound

The bolts being trimmed off. This is how I will be doing the No 985 soon!!

Workshop blog 11 – No 985

This is the making of the milling fixture to profile the No 985 sides. When I bought this machine the salesman said it had screw cutting but I never ever found it. It is important to do the screw cutting whilst everything is still in the machine; I have to move into each hole co-ordinate and cut the threads by hand.

New Workshop blog 1 (post retirement ????)

During the course of finishing off bits and pieces out of the back of the cupboard I decided I would put together some more No 98 planes. I was horrified to find not all the pieces there. However, I had already promised a plane to someone so I need to get on with it.

I am just making components as I need them. I will start with some pictures of the adjuster boss and post as I go. This No 98 plane was the start of my own designs (and the start of bevel up smoothers in general). You will notice from just these few pictures how much work is involved.

Over the years I have and many enquiries for this No 98 plane which I hadn’t been able to fulfill. So those of you who want one this is your only chance to get one. Just making a few. See my website for pricing.

Window to my Workshop 80

The bullnose and shoulder plane blades must be the most work intensive. Once finished I celebrate with a photo!

Bullnose blades 2

Bullnose infills

Infill/adjuster housing/plane bed – whatever

Always a good feeling when nearing completion, although there is still a lot of fitting and finishing after they are separated.
